Of course Joseph was afraid. His betrothed had become pregnant and he knew he was not the father. What an embarrassment for a faithful man? What would this mean to their small town? What would they think of Mary? How could Joseph trust Mary?
Joseph was also concerned about Mary and had decided to send her away quietly and then the Angel comes to him in a dream. What an amazing story. The angel says “don’t be afraid” this is part of God’s plan. You will be the earthly father to the Son of God. (Also something I would be afraid of.)
“Do not be afraid.” God tells His people over and over in the Bible. He tells us to not be afraid, but we are human. We know we are vulnerable and that we have fears and we see everyday what happens to other people, both physically and mentally. It is hard not to be afraid. Yet we see example after example from scripture as well as modern day miracles that God if faithful. When we reject fear, as Joseph did, we open up a new future of our own. Like our devotion writer puts it; “We have God’s promise to be with us in Christ, a promise that is stronger than our fear.”
Prayer: “O God, send us your messengers of peace, and help us to trust in your love, for Jesus’ sake. Amen.”
